How do I protect my house against a power surge?

Q: We had a power surge in our home last month and the result was that we lost a computer and our refrigerator. Is it possible to protect my home from these problems in the future?

A: Call Mr. Generators at 800,998-3494 and tell him you are interested in whole house surge protection. They can install a unit right inside your breaker panel that will protect all the circuits in your home. Good luck Murray

Washing Machine Repair

Q: Murray, my Maytag Heavy Duty, 2 Cycle Washing Machine needs a good, reliable service person whom I can depend upon to look at my washer and give me an estimate on repairs. I am looking for the information on this washing machine and believe it is 10-11 years old. I have had no problems with it until now. -Viola from Dearborn, MI

A: What a great question, because the appliance industry at one time was unregulated in the state of Michigan. Several years ago a good friend of mine Joe Gagnon was successful in helping pass a law which regulates that part of the appliance industry. The law now protects the homeowners from scam appliance repair companies. The appliance repair companies now are required to leave you the parts unless they are a trade-in part, they must also quote what the price of the repair before it is done. This is one of the factors now that will determine if you should repair or replace by reputable companies. I was part of the public hearings in Lansing that took place pertaining to the way unethical companies treated the public. Thank you Joe for your help. Now that I've given you a little background let me give you a resource. There are a lot of great reputable appliance dealers in the marketplace now throughout the country. One that I would highly recommend in your area is Bill & Rods Appliance, their phone number is 734-425-5040. As a closing note I've purchased from them in the past, had something go bad with the appliance, they serviced it twice and could not repair it and Maytag sent me a week after they couldn't fix it to buy a new aapliance. Ask for Kim or Linda. Thanks happy cooking. -Murray Gula
